What a great year it has been for Thuso Mbedu. Firstly, she secured a role in The Underground Railroad playing the character of Cora (farm slave) and now a nomination for Best Actress at the HCA TV Awards (Hollywood Critics Association TV Awards) Mbedu is nominated against Hollywood’s favorites Kate Winslet (Titanic) and Zendaya (Euphoria)!

This nomination couldn’t have come at a better time because the actress celebrated her 30th birthday Thursday. This not the first international award nomination for the Pietermaritzburg-born actress. Thuso Mbedu’s unforgettable performance on the interesting telenovela Is’Thunzi earned her two International Emmy Award nominations for Best Performance by an Actress. Needless to say that the girl has undeniable talent.

Earlier this year, Thuso Mbedu sat with Oprah Winfrey for a Zoom interview to discuss her amazing performance as Cora in the American TV show. Winfrey couldn’t help but praise our girl, “I have never, ever in this lifetime seen as consistent a performance as you have given in The Underground Railroad,” she said. During the interview, Mbedu opens up to Winfrey about many things. For instance, how her role as Cora brought her healing and the moment she almost lost herself on-set. Not forgetting her new friendship with Joel Edgerton who is also on the show.

Thuso Mbedu has also been on The Ellen Show. During the interview, Ellen Degeneres gifted the actress what she called a “special pair” of sneakers since she’s a collector. Her most recent interview was with fellow South African Charlize Theron for Vogue. Theron spoke on South Africa having emerging talent coming forth at this moment. Furthermore, Theron told Thuso Mbedu that “You guys are stepping in and setting that bar”.

This is certainly not the end for the actress. Thuso Mbedu will soon be appearing in a movie called The Woman King alongside Academy Award-winning actress Viola Davis. Like Winfrey said “great things are coming” for the actress.

We can’t wait to celebrate more of her great success stories. May she receive all the lady luck she desires and deserves!
